In programs such as QuarkXPress and Freehand use an actual font for bold, underlined, shadow or italics typefaces rather than change a font by using the "effects" on the Measurements Palette. Fonts created in this way may look fine on your screen but they will not output correctly through a Platesetter or Imagesetter RIP.

If your job includes a graphic or logo created in Freehand or Illustrator that contains type fonts it will need to be saved as an EPS file and converted to paths or outlines. This will prevent the link to the font being lost when the logo is placed into a document created in another program.

Points to note

  • Small type (10pt and below) works best when it is reproduced using one colour, black, a spot colour or one of the process colours. Coloured type created from several process colours will be converted to dot screens at the platemaking stage, this reduces its clarity and it will be prone to breaking up if any slight fit problems are encountered during printing.
  • Graphics or logo colours will need to have exactly the same colour specification as the colours used in the page creation program or they will reproduce differently.
  • For example if you create a logo in Freehand using Pantone 110CVU and add this colour to your palette ensure that any text or elements in the page creation programme are also in Pantone 110CVU and not Pantone 110CV. Otherwise you will have inadvertently added another colour to your job.
  • Similarly ensure that all CMYK elements for a particular colour have the same colour specifications or colours that should be the same will reproduce differently.
